What Is a Deep Cleaning?

Young man smiling in the street

If you haven’t gotten a dental cleaning in a while, you may require a deep cleaning. You may have bacteria built up beyond your gum line, and this creates a “pocket” between your teeth and gums which is a sign of moderate to severe gum disease. A deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing helps stop the spread of infection.

  • Why Do I Need a Deep Cleaning?
    • To maintain a healthy and beautiful smile.
    • To prevent decay, infection, gum disease, and tooth loss.
    • To remove stubborn plaque and tartar that your toothbrush can’t reach.
    • To catch problems early, before they become more expensive.
    • To ensure whole body health and well-being.

Does It Hurt?

Not at all. Your Las Vegas hygienist will numb your gums so that you don’t feel a thing. Your gums may feel sore following the deep cleaning, but it won’t last long. If you experience dental anxiety, please ask about your sedation options.

Frequently Asked Questions about Deep Cleanings

  • Do I really need a deep cleaning?

We’ll only recommend a deep cleaning if it’s in the best interest of your oral health. Your hygienist will evaluate the buildup of plaque and bacteria along your gum line, as well as the condition of your gums, before giving a diagnosis.

Please contact your local Las Vegas dentist to learn more about deep cleanings and gum disease treatments.

  • How often should I get a deep cleaning?

We may recommend periodontal maintenance after your deep cleaning. As long as you keep these appointments and maintain excellent oral care habits at home, you may eventually resume 6-month cleanings. We’ll never judge you if you’re behind on your cleaning.

  • How can I prepare for a deep cleaning?

Brush your teeth before your appointment.

  • What if I have a specific dental concern?

Speak up! Your dentist wants to know all about your dental history, your needs, and any concerns you have. If there’s a specific area of concern, we’ll be sure to address it.

Remember, it’s never too late to get your dental health back on track. If you’re overdue for a checkup and hygiene visit, please schedule your deep cleaning in Northwest Las Vegas today.

  • What if I experience dental anxiety?

We see and help patients with dental anxiety every day. We’re here to help you remain calm and to offer sedation options if you want them.
